Ms Barbers is pleased to present an exhibition of lamps and paintings by John Emison and Jamie Felton, respectively. Sun Power represents an ongoing dialogue between the artists around the functions of art and design vis-à-vis image, object, utility, and ornamentation. The subject-object relationship between picture and illumination gets heated when lamps turn on paintings and paintings turn on lamps — an erotics between beings and things.

Sun Power

Sun, can you come out and hug my face. Kiss my ears, eyes, and bellybutton. Give me sun freckles. Age me by five years. I want to be mature now. I need it and I am ready. I want to be weathered down by you. I want my clothes to be warm and sun bleached. I want the sunburn, iced with a layer of aloe.

Sun, can I ask you a favor? Can you help me melt an ice cube with a flower in it. Place it inside of me. So I am left with a single flower of beauty inside the bowls of my uterus. Petals will drown in a stained grapefruit punch. I will ooze pollen for a week. I’ll attract the bees and the birds. I’ll let them peck at me gradually. All will be welcomed.

Sun, can I ask one more favor? Can we freeze two bananas, topped with honey. Place them underneath my breasts. Like two U’s that trace the contours of my curves. Leave them out for the monkeys. They will come and rub their sticky hands along my lines. What is left is a tingle of melted banana, creating a sunday dessert for the honey bears. They will come and devour the rest.

I’m such a generous lover.
I’ll donate my body to you.
I’ll just sit there and become weathered for you.
Act as a motionless platter.
Sun beam off of aluminum.
You would share between
The birds, bees, monkeys, and honey bears.
But I really belong to you my sun.
